The Hawaiian Kids woke up to a bright, shining new day after a couple of days to stormy weather, heavy winds, and pouring rainstorms to start off a new week of build season! But with one week gone, the team came in early to finish up the work for week one, and to start on work for this week. Everyone worked diligently on their jobs and got a lot completed today. The video team met with their mentor Gene Kois and they discussed and edited the Open House video. They filmed the construction team, and also got more footage for the week 2 video as well as more footage for their Open House video. Over on the construction division, they worked on the prototype arm and also started to cut pieces for the actual version of the arm. We had two of our potential drivers operated a robot from a previous year to help them get acquainted to the field and the driving style Team 359 anticipates they will have. Meanwhile, the programming division activated the ability to have a real-time inverse for the drive train of the prototype robot. They also tested camera angles and the light for the vision targeting. Finally, in the world of CAD, the division worked on the animation sketch of their story line for the 2011 animation video by, today, making progress on populating the planets. Today was a preview for the second week of build season, and so far Team 359 is looking good.

The Hawaiian Kids' spent, school holidayDr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, working hard fabricating pieces for the robot, filming each division, and programming the prototype robot. Potential drivers of the 2011 season practiced using the controls of the 2007 robot, which game, Rack n Roll, is similar to this years game, Logomotion. Today, the construction team created a program on Mastercam to cut out a claw, with many triangles for weight reduction. First, they cut the piece out of wood, to make sure the program would work, then they tested the claw on the prototype arm, and lastly they cut the claw out of aluminum for the final product. Not only did the construction team work on the claw, but also on the arm of the robot; they welded the bracket for the window motor, assembled the vertical piece for the arm, and made the sprocket reduction for the window motor. As the programming division set up a pneumatics board for the prototype robot, the CAD division made aliens and started writing the narration of the script. Meanwhile, the video team filmed all of the different divisions, started the week two video, and worked on the open house video which will be shown in exactly a month from today. It was a long day for The Hawaiian Kids, but as the weeks progress days seem to get longer.

With a hard day at work for The Hawaiian Kids, received the FTC kit today to create the mini robot for the end game. At the last 10 seconds of each match, the main robot releases a mini robot to race the other mini robots of the opposing alliance up a 111 in. pole. This mini robot will only be made of FTC parts, which is why the construction division is figuring out the best and most effective way to build the mini robot. The construction team also cut circles on the vertical bandsaw to add to the arm. In the meantime, the video team filmed each division to add to both weekly and open house videos and the CAD division worked on the script for the animation video. As for the website division, they made safety graphics, and the documentation team created labels for a demonstration for this Saturday, January 22, 2011. Today, the work day was cut short so that we could pay our respect to our longtime mentor, Mrs. Juanita Sakamoto. We would like to thank you for all the years of support and all that you did for us. You will be missed dearly by us all.

Starting the day off with a bright and sunny afternoon, The Hawaiian Kids worked until the sun went down and the full moon arose. Each division was well at work today, for the video division started finalizing the week two video so it can be compressed and be given to the website creation division. They also continued filming the many other divisions on our team. As for the website creation division they uploaded yesterday's art and pictures to update the website. At the same time, the CAD division is creating a city for the animation and is fine tuning the storyline. For the construction division, they changed the design for the window motor mount from a cubical to a cylindrical design. They also created spacers for the mount and started a Mastercam program, a program designed to work on the Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) mill, to cut out pieces for weight reduction. Meanwhile, the programming division installed the driver for the 360 controller. It was a busy day for Team 359 as they reached the half point of week two.

With only one day left of week two, Team 359 accomplished many things within each division. For the programming division, they added the ability to switch between two modes, arcade and tank drive, for the drive of the prototype robot. They also laid down the lines of the field to match up with the scoring grid, so that they can practice tracking lines and as if in the autonomous period of the game. As for the construction team, they finished the CNC program that cuts out pieces for weight reduction for the window motor mount. This team also continued working on the arm of the robot, hoping to finalize it soon. However, the visual media division finalized the week two video, and is now beginning to start the week three video. In the meantime, the website creation division worked on the safety page for the web, while the documentation team printed pages for the program binder and prepared things for saturdays event. For the last division, CAD, worked on making characters for the animation video. As week two is coming to an end, The Hawaiian Kids prepare for the next four weeks to come.

Ending off week two, started with celebrating a birthday surprise for head advisor, Glenn Lee, and finishing off the day with great expectations for the weeks to come. As the saying goes, another year older, another year wiser, and for that we would like to thank Glenn Lee, for all that you have done for our team, because without you it wouldn't be the same. After celebrating with cake and ice cream, it was back to work for The Hawaiian Kids. The construction division continued working on the arm. They assembled the window motor to the motor mount, made keyholes for the shaft, and put the arm together to prepare it for the welding process. They also cut and lathed the attachments for the bumper, while working on the mini robot. As for the programming division, they drew out a layout for the pneumatics system. In the meantime, the video team filmed each division and finalized the week two video and the documentation team got things ready for the event tomorrow at Waialua Farmer's Market. For the event, they got bottles of water for donation, created a donation box, and packed up the VEX robots which will be demonstrated. The documentation team also updated the website, the career options, a list of which each student says what their future career is, and the sustainability section. It was a good and busy day to end week two; as Team 359 is almost at the halfway point of the six weeks, the goal of completing the 2011 robot is just a step closer. Imua Waialua!
