Team 359A had a VEX tournament at Kahala Mall on February 20, 2010. Meeting at the high school at 6:45 am, the students loaded the robot and all of their belongings into Mr. Wood's van, our mentor and programming instructor. We all looked so tired, as some of us went home nearly 11:00 pm the night before, working on the FRC robot. As teams arrived at the tournament, each set up their pit areas, which was located near the Food Court. Each team's pit areas were only half of the table, which was really small for the teams. There were 20 teams who participated in today's tournament. Team 359A had a very successful day. As they cleaned sweeped all of their opponents with a record of 6-0, they were the #1 seed. They were unstoppable! To make sure that they held their first place position, Team 359A constantly checked all the wiring and screws before each match. As teams were strategizing on which teams they would choose as their alliance, the Hawaiian Kids knew who they would choose. Being able to choose their alliance partner first, Waialua chose the Iolani Iobotics Team 2438. Both teams planned a maneuver on how they would play defense and offense. In the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and final matches, Team 359A and Team 2438 were able to score efficiently and a lot. Luckily, our robot had no problems, but unfortunately, Iolani's motor burned out in one of the matches. But this did not stop these two teams from competing. Before going into the Final Round, they observed the match between Campbell and McKinley to see what their robot could do so that we were able to develop a strategy to win against them. The Final Round came and our team challenged Team 2467, the Sabertrons of Campbell High School and their alliance partner 813. Following their strategy, Team 359A played defense while the Iobotics robot scored. As the final seconds of the match ended, Waialua and Iolani burst into excitement as the competition was over. Winning the entire VEX competition at Kahala Mall, driver Joshua Heintz and his team, Jarrin and Jonathan Oishi, received their Tournament Champion's trophy. Winning the competition also gave the opportunity for Waialua to compete in Dallas, Texas, along with Iolani High School at the World VEX Championships.
