This week one of our teamates had problems with tying his hair back. The action of tying your hair back is something construction and documentation deal with. So I researched the topic and found that a Yale student acutally died from getting her hair caught in a lathe. After reading the article I shared it with my fellow teamate to inform him why it is important to tie his hair back. Wether you are working or not you never want to take the chance of getting your hair caught in a machine it may cost you your life.
We also focused on not eating in our work area. With the long hours we put in during the week and on the weekends a snack is well needed every once in a while. It is good to feed your body but when eating in a work area it can be hazardous and make you sick. Keep following these tips and Safety will always be FIRSTS!
- Safety Captain Alana Rathburn
The Hawaiian Kids have reached the halfway point of the build season, and this week was all about putting all that they learned aboutSafety FIRST to the test, as the new members have learned enough skills to do regular construction tasks on their own. They were able to use many of the machines in the shop, such as the mill and the lathe, while following the regular procedures each had, such as keeping the object being worked on clamped into the vise as well as never blowing metal shavings toward a person during cleanup. Even those not associated with the construction team but spent time in here, such as the documentation team, followed their own set of rules, such as keeping off to the side of any job being done as well as being aware of their surroundings while they shoot footage or take pictures for obstacles. Most importantly, all students and mentors followed the most important rule of all: to have protective eyewear along with covered shoes while in the shop. We find that, with enough reminders and regulations set in place, following the safety procedures become second nature to those who frequent the autoshop, and this week was proof of that.
