The Hawaiian Kids, Team 359, ended the 2008 FRC competition season on April 21, 2008, after bringing home the 2nd most prestigious award from the FIRST World Championship Event in Atlanta, Georgia: the Engineering Inspiration Award. The team traveled to Atlanta not only to compete with their robot, but also for the Championship Chairman’s Award. The road leading up to the championship event required a lot of time and effort but the hard work put in resulted in the most awards ever won by Team 359 in any single season. These awards include: Best Web site (VCU), Motorola Quality (VCU), KPC&B Entrepreneurship (VCU and Hawaii), Regional Finalists (Hawaii), Regional Chairman’s (Hawaii), and Engineering Inspiration (Championship.)

The FIRST World Championships brought 342 of the best FRC teams in the world from the US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, & Israel for three days of excitement and intense competition. Team 359 was placed in the Newton division, which included 85 top teams, such as The Pink Team, Team 233 and The RAWC, Team 968. Team 359 ended the qualifying matches with a 2-5-0 record, ranking 65 out of 85 teams and was chosen as a 3rd alliance partner by RoboHawks, Team 2591. The alliance, Team 2591, 47 and 359 advanced to the quarterfinals where they lost to the #1 seeded alliance: Team 968, 233 and 60. Though this year our program was not quite strong enough to win the most prestigious award: The Championship Chairman’s, winning the Engineering Inspiration Award is proof that we are extremely close.

After the excitement of competition was over, Team 359 enjoyed a day at Six Flags: Over Georgia Amusement Park. This season was a successful one for Waialua; besides the numerous awards, Team 359 strengthened their bond as a team as well as their collaborations with other teams throughout the world. Though the competition season may be over until next year, Team 359 has various activities, projects, and outreach events to work on during the off season. ALOHA!
