WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

APRIL 2025

After qualifying in Week 1 at the Canadian Pacific Regional, our team flew and drove to Houston, Texas, for the FIRST Championship. Alongside 601 other FRC teams and 76 in our division, Curie, we were so excited to compete alongside some of the best teams from all over the world!

CELEBRATING TEAM SPIRIT

Throughout the event, we connected with other teams to share insights on our outreach initiatives and learn about theirs. There were many teams from around the globe that were specifically looking to talk to us, and we enjoyed meeting everyone. We also handed out our 2025 Team Magazine, providing anyone interested with an in-depth look at our team’s history, projects, and goals!

ALLIANCE SELECTION

During the second and third days of the tournament, we took part in the opening ceremony before diving into our qualification matches! Partnering with two other teams, we combined our scouting data to refine our tactics and enhance our robot’s performance. Between matches, we reviewed our progress, made targeted adjustments to both hardware and strategy, and stayed flexible to what our opponents presented. We perfected our “around the world” autonomous routine which we used in many of our matches. By the end of day three, our 7-2-1 (win-lose-tie) record had earned us a 10th-place ranking.

PRACTICE DAY

Practice day finally arrived, and our team was eager to get started. We guided the robot into the pit for inspection, then stepped onto the field to take in its dimensions and surface conditions, lighting here was different than any other tournament. Packing our pit was a challenge, so we designed the components to break down for easier shipping and reassembly. Though setup took time, it gave us a great chance to bond as a team while building it together! During the practice matches, we concentrated on refining our driving precision, experimenting with more advanced maneuvers, and carefully noting any performance issues. Back in the pit, we regrouped to compare observations, tightened a few loose connections, updated our control software, and fine-tuned our strategy for tomorrow’s qualification rounds. The experience was a valuable warm-up—our robot ran more smoothly, our teamwork grew stronger, and we left feeling prepared and confident for the competition ahead.

QUALIFICATION MATCHES

On the following day, our excitement soared as we joined forces with alliance partners 4611 (OZone), 88 (TJ²), and 3100 (Lightning Turtles) as the 6th alliance. Together, we crafted match-by-match strategies, combining our strengths to advance all the way to the semifinals with our valuable teamwork. In match 10, our arm broke, and 3100 immediately began systems check in case they needed to get swapped in. But with seconds left on the clock, we were able to get the arm installed and made it on the field. We are so proud of our alliance’s amazing teamwork!  Although we fell short of the finals, the experience was invaluable—and we couldn’t have reached that stage without the unwavering guidance of our mentors and the camaraderie of the other teams. Competing alongside such skilled, passionate individuals was a true privilege, and we’re deeply grateful for every moment of this unforgettable journey.

IMUA WAIALUA!

During the tournament, we were 1 out of 8 teams that were given the Engineering Inspiration Award. This is our first time since 2010 to be given this honor! We were incredibly proud to be recognised for all the efforts our students and mentors make in promoting STEM education and respect for engineering. As the season draws to a close, we feel incredibly fortunate to have connected with so many talented teams and mentors who generously shared their insights and experiences. Beyond developing our competitive strategies, we’ve gained life lessons that will stay with us long after the final match. Our team remains dedicated to growing together, refining our skills, and embracing every opportunity to learn. We’re already readying up for the off-season and can’t wait to share our next adventures—stay tuned through our website and social media!
