Haleiwa Shingon Mission Bon Dance 2025

July 2025

On July 11th and 12th, Team 359 students and mentors vollunteered to help at the Haleiwa Shingon Mission Bon Dance, an event that brings people together to honor their loved ones.

FOOD FUN!

The students enthusiastically manned the food stalls, tackling tasks such as food preparation and order management. They served a variety of local favorites like saimin, spam musubi, teri burgers, and a team favorite, BBQ skewers! For dessert, there was the classic shave ice with delicious toppings like ice cream and condensed milk! As people delighted in their food, the air was filled with mesmerizing performances from graceful dancers and powerful taiko drummers. An infectious energy swept through the crowd, inviting everyone to partake in the dancing, laughter, and fun! This heartwarming gathering reminded us all that when we unite as a community, we can create unforgettable memories and foster a welcoming, joyful atmosphere for all.

Obon Dances play a crucial role in preserving Buddhism and Japanese culture in Hawaii. Hundreds come from across the island, donned in kimonos and yukatas, to honor the spirit of their ancestors and loved ones. Volunteering at these events helps preserve these traditions in our communities!

ARRIVAL AND PREPARATION

As the students joined the festival team, they were assigned significant responsibilities to contribute to its success. Collaboratively, they arranged seating, put up signs, organized parking, took food orders, and operated the concession area. Everyone's role was important, and this teamwork helped create a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone! This collaboration taught the students the value of working together and how each person's contribution matters in achieving a common goal. This service is a treasured local annual tradition, honoring our ancestors with joy, dance, and community spirit!
